Stop Shopping, Save Ocean

How much clothes do you buy in a year? NO IDEA!! According to a data 3.5 million people buy clothes in only 4 day sales in ‘Myntra App’. We love buying clothes but you know what ocean cost pays for your shopping! Yes, How?

Nowadays, shopping become so easier just click on “Buy now” and wait for doorbell to ring. The main happiness is in unpacking the packet. We can’t Stop ourselves from shopping and it’s double when it’s come with discount tag. But STOP! Before adding to cart do you ever think why these clothes are so cheap? I mean designing, manufacturing, shipping and advertising still that top come under Rs.299, how? Only because the material which from that cloth made is Polyester. Just go to your wardrobe and see the tag on your clothes. This polyester make a very strange relationship with our oceans. Polyester is strong, flexible, water resistance and cheap!! After few days when Lint start coming out from the clothes which is non-biodegradable and polyester is plastic so their lint is plastic.

Next question is how this lint reach to ocean? I explain, when we wash our clothes lint pass from our drains and then sewage treatment plant and eventually goes to Ocean. Overall whatever plastic is found in ocean, 35% are polyester. There is famous quote that – “If you want to know the next year fashion colour, see the colour of China’s river”.

So after selling at that cheap cost how they make profit? For making profit, they have to sale a huge amount of product. They just change the trends like winter fashion, summer fashion,etc.,. So the consumer start feeling that they need clothes and they get more customers. They get support from influencers, celebrities and sales!! Then in one blink your are in their feeds scrolling or visiting stores near by you.

So, what is the solution then? Start buying cotton clothes? NO!! Because a cotton shirt requires approx 3000L of water to manufacture. Then what to do? Answer is simple- Stop buying unnecessary clothes. Because of they are in sale doesn’t mean that you need them. Buy clothes when you need them. See you only not controlling your expenses but you are saving Mother Earth! So, think you need that top or you just want them!
